DALLAS — Jan. 18, 2026 — Mundus Artium Press today announced Hamdy Elgabry of Egypt as its 2025 Literary Translator of the Year, honoring a distinguished career devoted to bridging cultures through the art of translation. Elgabry is recognized for his scholarly rigor, literary sensitivity, and enduring contribution to cross-cultural understanding through language.
A Professor Emeritus in the Department of English at Suez Canal University, Elgabry has spent decades shaping literary scholarship and translation in the Arab world and beyond. Born in 1953, he earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in English literature in 1980 and 1985, respectively, and has supervised numerous master’s and doctoral dissertations in English and American literature in Egypt and internationally.
Elgabry’s body of work spans poetry, criticism, philosophy, and literary theory. His original Arabic poetry collections include It Is the Last Hour of Sleep, Portrait of a Family, and Discourse Is Your Sin, as well as a landmark six-volume study of haiku in Arabic. As a translator, his work reflects exceptional breadth, encompassing authors and disciplines ranging from Jean Baudrillard, Jacques Derrida, James Joyce, Melanie Klein, and William Shakespeare to existential philosophy, sociology, ethics, education, and the philosophy of time.
He has also translated Indian short fiction and major historical and cultural studies, including works on Cleopatra, while bringing Arabic poetry to English-language audiences.
In addition to his publications, Elgabry has contributed extensively to academic journals and participated in scholarly conferences in Egypt and the United States. His academic appointments and visiting engagements have included multiple universities across the United States, including institutions in Florida and Pennsylvania.
Mundus Artium Press said the award recognizes not only Elgabry’s literary achievements but also his lifelong commitment to fostering dialogue between cultures through translation. His work, the press said, exemplifies the power of literature to transcend borders and deepen global understanding.
