Mundus Artium: A Journal of International Letters and the Arts (2024)

2024 — Volume XVIII — numbers 1 & 2 | Add to Cart

This double issue for 2024 continues the revitalized journey of the Mundus Artium journal, building on the foundation established in the 2023 relaunch issue. Following the tradition of our world literature periodical founded in 1967, this volume advances the journal’s commitment to international literary exchange, friendship across borders, and the pursuit of beauty in form and thought.

In keeping with our global literary vision, this issue’s contributions span multiple continents and traditions, featuring voices from the Balkans, Greece, Hungary, India, Israel, Poland, Romania, Russia, the Netherlands, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States and Uzbekistan.

The issue opens with an interdisciplinary essay by astrophysicist Roger Malina, geoscientist Robert Stern and poet Frederick Turner, exploring the evolution of the Bass School of Arts, Humanities and Technology at the University of Texas at Dallas as a case study of scientific emergence.

The issue features an in-depth interview with Romanian writer Ion Deaconescu (Gjenima Prize winner, 2024), celebrating poetry’s ability to transcend borders and “awaken consciences” despite threats to authentic expression.

Other essays include Metin Turan’s reflections on maintaining literature’s intimacy in the digital age, Gjekë Marinaj’s argument for inclusive theory in literary translation, and James Manteith’s account of Jules Verne’s cross-cultural relevancy.

A special tribute honors the journal’s late poetry editor Gerry Loose (1948-2024). The issue features poetry by Elijah Perseus Blumov, Rodoljub Ćorić, Angela De Leo (Gjenima Prize winner, 2023), Annemarie Estor (Frederick Turner Prize winner, 2024), John Farndon, Mihai Firică, Dave Jilk, Dinos Koubatis, Alicja Maria Kuberska, Gilad Meiri, Maria Mistrioti, Milunika Mitrović, Miljan Mijušković, Dániel Levente Pál, Sunčica Radulović Torbica, Khosiat Rustam, Amanita Sen and Vadim Terekhin. Long-form poetry includes two acts from Blumov’s verse drama “Yitzhak: A Tragedy” and a dramatic monologue from Jilk’s “Epoch: A Poetic Psi-Phi Saga.”

Contributing translators include Rosalind Buck, Inès Cercel, Maftuna Dunyo, Vivian Sohn Eden, Lisa Katz, Gerry Loose, Selvaggia C Serini, Paul Sohar and Jenny Wade.

The issue announces the 2024 winners of literary prizes sponsored by Mundus Artium and Mundus Artium Press: Ion Deaconescu (Gjenima Prize), Kooseul Kim (Babel Prize), Annemarie Estor (Frederick Turner Prize), and Vlashi Fili (Mundus Artium Prize).

Three book reviews highlight recent publications: Gjekë Marinaj on Angela De Leo’s “Steps,” Dan Lupescu on Zhao Lihong’s “Transformations,” and Mike Lo on Marinaj’s “Teach Me How to Whisper: Horses and Other Poems.”

This issue’s “Nostalgia” section resurrects James Kirkup’s surrealist short story “The Part-Time Poetry Tutor,” first published in Mundus Artium in 1968.

The issue’s cover art is by the noted Albanian modernist Gjelosh Gjokaj.
